Travis County Builds It Better

What's Happening
Travis County voted to approve their first Public Improvement District on Jan. 26th. A public improvement district, also known as a PID, is a geographical area designated to build infrastructure and promote growth. Better Builder standards include providing a living wage, OSHA-10 safety training, and worker's compensation to all construction workers. In addition, the developer must implement a local hiring goal and allow independent on-site monitoring to ensure these standards are upheld. "Responsible development in our community starts with responsible developers, and we believe elected officials must do more to reward developers who commit to higher standards for construction workers," said Bo Delp, Better Builder Program Director at Workers Defense Project. "We applaud the Commissioner's Court for today's vote, and for taking an important step towards serving as a model for…

A Pilgrimage of Immigrant Families

What's Happening
Join us on a three-day pilgrimage from the Hutto Detention Center to the Governor’s Mansion in Austin as we speak out and demand that Gov. Abbott meet with the immigrant families he has harmed in his opposition to immigration relief. The pilgrimage will begin on Nov. 19 and end on Nov. 21 with 5,000 people rallying at noon at the Governor’s mansion. We will demand that Gov. Abbott stop playing politics with the lives of immigrant families As attorney general, Abbott led the 26-state lawsuit against the implementation of President Obama’s executive order expanding DACA and DAPA. November marks the one-year anniversary of President Obama’s executive action on immigration. Texas is home to nearly 2 million undocumented immigrants and estimates suggest that 750,000 would be eligible for relief from deportation…

Expand Better Builder

What's Happening
We have teamed with the online fundraising platform Indiegogo to raise funds to help expand our Better Builder Program in Dallas. Through the Better Builder program we create innovative strategies that partner with the public and private sectors to raise standards for workers while also leveling the playing field for honest businesses to compete. Better Builder works with developers to ensure workers receive a fair wage; have safe working conditions; and earn a rewarding career in the construction industry. How the Better Builder program works: Developers make a firm commitment to Better Builder standards, and developers incorporate those standards into their construction contracts. Construction contractors are required to implement standards with all subcontractors by developers. Construction businesses compete on a level playing field, without lowering wages or risking worker safety…
