Workers Defense statement on SB 4 Senate vote
Community vigil to be held tonight at 7:30 PM on the North side of the Capitol
Senate passes SB 4 on a party line vote of 20 -11, Final vote expected tomorrow
Austin – Today, the Texas Senate voted on SB 4, 20 -11 After 6 hours of discussion on the floor and 39 amendments SB 4 will go on to the Texas House.
“SB 4 is a misguided priority of the state and our members will continue to show up at the capitol along with Texans from across the state to oppose SB 4, “ said Jose P. Garza, Executive Director of the Workers Defense Project. “The 1.8 million undocumented immigrants that live in our state are hard working and are responsible for building the houses and skyscrapers that dot our communities and skyline. They pay 1.6 billion in taxes and contribute to the success of our businesses and economy.”
Tonight advocates will hold a vigil on the north side of the Texas Capitol at7:30 PM to stand with immigrant families.
Last Thursday, over 1,140 people registered in opposition of SB 4 during the Senate State Affairs committee. After 16-hours of testimony the committee voted it out 7 -2.
