Workers Defense statement on OSHA fines issued on Austin trench accident

Over $120,000 in OSHA fines on Austin City Project

The Executive Director of the Workers Defense Project, Jose P. Garza, released the following statement on the OSHA fines issued to construction companies that exposed workers to trenching hazards in a downtown Austin project last April.

OSHA estimates 54 excavation fatalities each year because employers fail to inspect their worksites and take the necessary precautions to keep their workers safe. While this is a positive step for the worker and the family, no fine or penalty can undo the pain and trauma experienced by a worker and their family. Dangerous working conditions will not be tolerated and Workers Defense Project will continue to fight for better working conditions for men and women in the construction industry.“

Last week, a worker was killed and another was injured on a Lockhart construction site due to an excavation cave-in.
