Report Back: Press Conference Follows Another Near-Tragedy

What's Happening
On June 9, WDP proudly announced the Premier Community Builder partnership Agreement with Maxum Development at the 21Rio apartment complex, two years after three workers died while working on the building, a Maxum development project. Last week's landmark victory for construction workers came on the heels of yet another avoidable tragedy in Austin's construction industry, which served as a call to attention for those of us who watch working conditions. As we all well know, summer time in Austin brings about soaring temperatures that can be deadly for those working outside all day. WDP Wage Theft Bill Signed by the Governor!

What's Happening
Stop Wage Theft! WDP's Wage Theft Bill was signed by Governor Rick Perry and is now law! This bill makes it easier for police departments across Texas to arrest employers who don’t pay their workers, and closes an important loophole which allowed employers to avoid criminal theft of services charges by making a minimal payment to their workers. With the passage of this bill, thousands more workers will be able to recover their well-deserved wages! Check out our news coverage on this exciting victory on KUT at ">http://kut.org/2011/06/legislators-aim-to-curb-wage-theft/

Check out our new video on workplace fraud!

What's Happening
Workplace Fraud occurs when employers misclassify their workers as independent contractors, illegally avoiding state and federal payroll taxes and stripping workers of their rights. In Texas, workplace fraud results in at least $35 million dollars lost to the Texas Unemployment Fund each year. Workplace Fraud is bad for workers, bad for business and bad for Texas.
